Exploring Barcelona, Spain

Disclaimer: We only got the opportunity to stay one night and spend almost one day in Barcelona. We were taking a cruise and left the port around 4pm. We will definitely be going back someday to experience more of the amazing culture Barcelona has to offer. For this post, it is all about our time that we were lucky enough to have there.

Transportation

  • TMB Metro (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona): We did a lot of walking in Barcelona but when we went to La Rambla we decided to take the metro. The metro was only 3€ per person and we got off at the “La Rambla” station (of course). This transportation was easy enough for us to understand so we think that anyone could manage it.

Accommodations

  • Tripledos Bed and Breakfast: Located in the heart of Barcelona, this is a popular Bed and Breakfast and for good reason! The room was very clean, the bed was amazingly comfortable, and the Spanish breakfast was delicious. The owners were extremely friendly also.

We had to arrive past check in time since our flight was getting in later than we expected and we emailed them to ask if somehow we could check in past the time. They responded and gladly accommodated us by leaving us a key to get in and we paid our very reasonable bill of $90 the next morning when we came down for breakfast. It was also our honeymoon and we mentioned that to them. They had chocolates in the room with a note of congratulations. It was so thoughtful of them!

To-Do

  • La Sagrada Família: One of the tallest religious buildings in the world, this Basilica is only about 70% finished and is still being built. It has been in the makings since 1866 and the goal is to be finished building by 2026. We woke up early to head to the Basilica. We bought our tickets ahead of time and we suggest you do too, it alleviates a lot of stress of having to wait in another line to purchase tickets and then a line to get in.

Tickets were 15€ for basic entry. You can purchase tickets for more money that includes a tour-self guided or with a tour guide. We do not generally enjoy tour groups so we stuck to reading about the history ourselves inside the Basilica. It is already so breathtakingly beautiful, we can only imagine what it will look like once it’s finished.

Entering La Sagrada Família

Once we got our bags searched and were granted entry through the gates, we were able to walk inside and marvel at the beautiful interior. There were stunning stained glass windows, high stone columns, and skylights. It is one of the most impressive churches we have seen. We spent around 2 hours inside, exploring and taking it all in. It was hard to have to leave but we could not stay there forever of course!

Below are the directions we took to get there from the B&B:

  • La’Rambla: One of the most popular streets in Barcelona, this is where a lot of shops and restaurants are located. We took the metro to reach this area and just took our time walking along the street. It was nice to find a bench and do some people watching as well, as we always try to do.

Food

  • Cerveceria Catalana: We were starving and wanted some good tapas-traditional Spanish food. Located on La Rambla street, we found this great restaurant with good tapas and amazing sangrias. The staff was very friendly and the prices were not outrageous.

We really enjoyed our brief time spent here and it gave us just a small taste of all that Barcelona has to offer. We will be going back one day and we encourage you to visit!
